British Airways Data Breach

British Airways have announced that they have been subject to several data breaches, where hundreds of thousands of customer’s personal information and financial details were compromised. If you have been subject to one of these data breaches, you could be entitled to claim compensation of up to £6,000.

The airline announced on the 6th September 2018 that their security systems had been breached by hackers and 500,000 customers had had their personal data and card payment details were stolen. Whilst investigating this breach a second data breach was spotted affecting a further 185,000 people. In 2019 a third British Airways Data Breach was uncovered through their e-ticketing system, where hackers could access and change the flight booking details and personal information of passengers. The impact of these breaches was huge.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has issued a notice of intention to fine British Airways £183 million over the breach under the new GDPR. After a High Court hearing, the final cut-off date to join group litigation to claim compensation from British Airways was established as the 17th January 2021. Therefore, it is important you act now to ensure you get the compensation you deserve before time runs out.

How do I know if I have been affected?

British Airways notified 500,000 customers potentially affected by the data breach in September and October 2018 using the email address: BritishAirwaysGB@fly.ba.com. The email sent from this address had the subject line ‘Criminal Theft of Customer Data, more information.’ To check if you received this email search this title or ‘British Airways’ into your email inbox, junk/spam folder, and deleted items.

British Airways have offered to reimburse customers who have suffered financial loss as a result of the breach but have so far failed to admit liability for this breach.

What is a group litigation case?
