What Happened?
On 5th March 2020, Virgin Media announced around 900,000 of its customers have been the victims of a data breach following a failure to secure their database. Virgin Media have confirmed the database was left unsecured and accessible online for 10 months.
Virgin Media have also confirmed the database was accessed ‘on at least one occasion’ by an unknown user. Virgin Media have confirmed the breach was not due to a hack or criminal attack but because the database had been ‘incorrectly configured’ by a member of staff not following the correct procedures
The breach, which was ongoing for 10 months, was only noticed when spotted by a security researcher at TurgenSec, a cyber-security company. Failing TurgenSec alerting Virgin Media to this breach, it could have been ongoing for much longer.
Virgin Media has informed the Information Commissioner’s Office as required and an investigation has been launched.
