JD Sports Data Breach
The fashion and sportswear chain JD Sports has announced it has been the victim of a serious cyberattack. In a statement to investors, the company revealed that hackers were able to access personal data of millions of customers who had used their online store. The company has apologised to its customers, and says it is working with relevant agencies to investigate how the breach took place.
Having your personal data in the hands of cybercriminals can lead to a number of risks, including identity theft and financial losses. It can also be a distressing experience, with an impact on your mental wellbeing. That’s why it’s important to remember that data breach victims are entitled to seek compensation.
The JD Sports data breach was first disclosed on 30th January 2023, when the company published a statement indicating that approximately 10 million customers had their personal data accessed by hackers. The company’s CFO, Neil Greenhalgh, apologised to customers and advised them to be vigilant about potential scams. He also affirmed that “protecting the data of our customers is an absolute priority for JD.”
What information was stolen?
JD Sports provided a list of the information that hackers may have been able to access through the data breach. It includes:
Names
Billing addresses
Email addresses
Delivery addresses
Phone numbers
Order details
The last four digits of the payment card number
As you can see, this is a significant amount of personal information. It exposes victims to the possibility of serious issues such as identity fraud, but it can also be used as part of a phishing scam, in which the hackers impersonate a trusted organisation using the data they already have about you.
JD Sports were nevertheless keen to stress that they do not store full payment card numbers, so hackers will have been unable to access these. They also indicated that they have no reason to believe that hackers accessed account passwords.
Despite this, anyone who is concerned they may have been affected should contact their bank to check for any suspicious activity and change the password for their online account.

Who has been affected by the breach?
JD Sports indicated that as many as 10 million customers could have had their data stolen as part of the breach. The customers affected made online orders through the company’s website between November 2018 and October 2020. However, it does not seem to be the case that every person who made an order in this timeframe will have had their data stolen.
How do I know if I have been affected?
JD Sports have stressed that they are “proactively contacting affected customers” to inform them of the breach. However, given the number of people whose data may have been exposed, this may take some time. If you made an online order from JD Sports in the relevant timeframe and have not heard anything yet, you can contact the company directly for more information. You should also take the steps mentioned above to try and prevent any further issues.
